Author Study All About Denise Fleming!
Biographical Information:
Denise Fleming was born on January 31st. 1950 in Toledo, Ohio. She has one little sister. Her dad build furniture in their basement workshop and her mother was into theater. Denise use to watch her dad build and he even shared his space by letting Denise make things out of paper- mache and wood. In high school she took tons of art classes and even won multiple awards for her artwork.
In the third grade Denise was chosen to participate in classes at the Toledo Museum of Art. Several of her paintings were included in an art exchange program with other countries. One of her paintings were chosen to be on the cover of a teachers' magazine and was later published.
After high school I went to Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan. While attending Kendall Denise met her husband, David, who is also an artist. They got married right after graduation. They had a little baby girl named Indigo in 1979.
Children's author Denise Fleming loves her cats, her one dog, and her work. She uses colored cotton pulp and hand-cut stencils to illustrate her books. She used to haul stacks of picture books home from the library and ever since, she felt making books was something she had to do!. Her stories are very short and the text is simple, but the illustrations are grand! Making books is a team effort. Denise, David (her husband) and her daughter all work together to create and edit her children's books!

All of her children’s books are geared towards the early elementary grades pre-k to 2nd. Denise's books are bases off of her personal experience. The characters in her story are based on the people and animals in her life. Her work appeals to children in these grades because it’s fun, colorful and easy for them to connect with.

Activities
-**On Denise's Homepage (below) are tons of activities for teachers and students that go along with plenty of her books. Check it out and have fun!!!
-underGROUND: This book is all about the animals that live underground. How animals dig holes and create a home underground. An activity that teachers can do with their students for this book is create a diorama of underground. The students can create all the animals that live underground like aunts, chipmunks, groundhogs, and moles. Once they are done creating their animals the teacher will add them to the class diorama.
-The FIrst Day of Winter: An activity for this book is to have the students create their own snowman! The students will use paper, glue, string, glitter, etc. to make their own personal snowman. They will name their snowman and write one sentence or a couple of words describing their snowman.
-Barnyard Banter: This book is all about farm animals. Students will create their own farm animal. As a class they will create their own farm with tons of different farm animals.
-Buster: This book is about a dog named Buster. An activity for this book is a fun one! The class will have a stuffed animal dog that they are able to take home with them overnight or over the weekend. They will have to keep a journal, have their parents help them depending on the grade, on what they do with their dog Buster!
